Call of the Era

being the Change, through changing our Being

A little book of big ideas . . .
sowing seeds of possibility for a viable future.

Set within the genre of spiritual practice education this book is contemplative in orientation, and as such, utilises both original artworks and text to convey the nature of belonging within a world crying out for change.

In response to the turbulent times we are experiencing, this book offers a framework for reimagining a new Western shelter of belonging, grounded by a principle of interconnectedness, through unity with diversity.

Abstract

We each long to experience belonging in our world. Yet how can we experience belonging in a world characterised by the phrase: “All is not well!” Because all is not well, our world is crying out for change; change toward a more equitable world for all life forms. Yet, the necessary social and environmental transformations cannot occur without a shift in our self-perception; a redefinition of our human identity. Why? Our sense of identity determines not only our experience of belonging but also influences our actions in the world. Therefore, while the Call of the era is toward social change, the deeper spiritual Call is one of reimagining, or recasting our human way of being in the world. For this reason, the Call of this era is one of seeking change from the inside . . . out. The Call is one of being the change we want to see in the world, through changing our way of being in the world.

In response to such a Call, and focussing primarily on the Western cultural identity, the book offers a framework of understanding regarding:

  • the nature of human belonging

  • one view of our historical time

  • certain characteristics of change

  • a fresh look at the Western cultural identity

  • tenets of a new Western cultural song of belonging

Why write this book, at this time?

Many authors have characterised our era as another turning point in history. Turning points are disruptive and disorientating. No wonder many of us are bereft of an authentic experience of belonging. We do live in challenging times! Even though many authors have written commentaries on our era as a turning point, one point of difference in Call of the Era: being the Change, through changing our Being, is that rather than a general commentary lamenting the state of our era, this bite-sized book introduces readers to tenets of a new cultural identity for today’s world. The tenets are orientated around the principle of interconnectedness through unity with diversity. A new identity will foster a new cultural song of belonging. Additionally, a new cultural identity will inherently create a value system that promotes the thriving of all life forms.

Is change truly possible?

Is it possible to transform our experience of identity, belonging, and values? Yes! This isn't the first time in our history that we've been called to undertake such a sacred task, and it certainly won't be the last. Recasting our human way of being in the world within the light of current knowledge and beliefs regarding the nature of reality, and the origins of the world we inhabit, is the sacred work of being human. While not an easy task, a transformation of cultural identity is possible. A new cultural song of belonging is possible. A new cultural values system that seeks the flourishing of all life forms, is possible.
